DON REITZ: The Expressive Genius
A retrospective featuring new work from his estate

Saturday February 25, 2017 - Saturday April 8, 2017
Opening Reception February 25, 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Don Reitz (1929 - 2014)

1929 - 2014 ďMY ART has always come out of need. Not everyone may like what I do, but I can only make what I feel in my heart. You have to have courage to put out what you know to be truth. I enjoy art that has something to say, or questions to ask. I enjoy knowing I am the sum of all that has gone before. Through art, I am able to make the intangible tangible, release my subconscious and give physical reality to emotional conditions. When I work, I am a loner. I canít have anyone in the studio. Itís a very personal and private place. I am pretending in there. But Iím never lonely, and I love involvement with people. Thatís why I do workshops.Ē - Don Reitz

Don Reitz, one of the great geniuses of contemporary ceramics was devoted to clay, color and expression throughout his career. This exhibition presents work from his three great periods: the Sara series--in which he used color to narrate stories on earthenware clay; his wood-fire period using fire and ash for expression; and his color with wood-fire and salt which was a summation of the many elements in his life works.
