IDEAS OF NORTH
September 7 - October 6, 2013
Updated 6/3/15 IDEAS OF NORTH Representing the evolution of the artist's ideas over time and the newest directions in his work, Ideas of North continues Steven Heinemann's longstanding interest in the hybrid quality of ceramics. In a style both classical and minimal, he investigates the natural and cultural features of clay, an organic material with a long history of human use, finding connections at the boundaries between the two. Brochure available upon request.
"There's a decidedly northern slant to many of the titles, northern, Inuit place names, as well as the exhibition title itself which is a tribute to pianist Glenn Gould's legendary radio piece 'The Idea of North'--potentially a kind of a talisman for those of us inhabiting this highly urbanized strip on the southern edge of a vast northern expanse, who may give thought to the role of the north on the Canadian imagination, or psyche."
