Peter Beaseker’s work of late represents a combination of things seen and felt in the past few years.Three stand out.Encountering Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipses and Spirals has given him a greater appreciation and feel for gravity, and has lead him to rethink previously held notions of containment. Seeing a simple cylindrical “carrier” at a flea market, resembling an open wooden hatbox with a thin metal handle spanning the volume struck him as a beautifully sparse and sturdy object that spoke to a history of use.And walking the grounds of Mont Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico he became aware of the quiet power of an expansive, flat plane.Within their own respective languages, the sculptures, carrier, and ruins express a sense of clarity and elegance. This series reflects his desire to have such qualities in a simple, direct object.
