Don Reitz

Don Reitz is a modern day folk legend and larger-than-life. Consider his cycles of life as a youthful and adventuresome Tom Sawyer, Bunyanesqe in early adulthood and currently sporting the sagely wisdom of a Mark Twain. He is a homespun storyteller with an insight that pours forth in a rapid flow, infecting and endearing him to all near.Challenged by illness stemming from advanced age, Don Reitz continues to advance his artistic vision, making the necessary adaptations in producing new and exciting work, teaching workshops, firing wood kilns for six continuous days, all the while inspiring a new generation of ceramic practitioners.

- Peter Held,
excerpt from "The Fearless Nature of Being: The Legacy of Don Reitz"

Born in 1929, he received his masters at Alfred University in the early 1960’s. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin where he taught for 26 years and has influenced a generation of artists. His list of awards and medals is lengthy and he is considered one of the top 10 living ceramic artists today. Don Reitz is represented by the key museums in the U.S., including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, LACHMA, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Arts and Design, New York, and the Renwick Museum of Art in Washington, D.C.
